Who Can Apply?
Relationship Requirement: You must be married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen or a person with settled status in the UK. Unmarried partners can also apply if they have been living together in a relationship akin to marriage for at least two years.
Age Requirement: Both partners must be at least 18 years old.
Financial Requirement: The sponsor must meet the minimum income threshold of £29,000 gross per year for new spouse or partner visa applications submitted on or after 11 April 2024. Under the current rules, there is no additional income requirement for dependent children.
If the first spouse or partner visa application was submitted before 11 April 2024, transitional rules apply. In these cases, the previous threshold of £18,600, plus £3,800 for the first dependent child and £2,400 for each additional child, continues to apply for visa extensions and settlement applications on the same route.
Accommodation Requirement: The couple must have adequate accommodation in the UK that meets UK living standards.
English Language Requirement: The applicant must demonstrate a basic knowledge of English, either by passing an approved English language test or by having a degree taught in English.
